Cautions
Extreme sports can be dangerous and result in serious injury or death.
Fitting of camera systems should only be undertaken by competent
technicians and supervised/approved by participants or engineers familiar
with the activity.
In the case of flying or parachuting where the systems may interfere with
the integrity of the aircraft or jumpers, extreme caution and safety
approvals should be applied. Example: Cables must not interfere with
flying controls. Nothing must be allowed to fall free in cockpits where
they can jam controls, fall under rudder pedals etc. Hand held cameras
MUST have straps to prevent them dropping or falling out of aircraft
during aerobatic manoeuvres - a camcorder that normally weighs a few
pounds on the ground will weigh "like a ton of bricks" when
positive or negative "G" forces are applied.
Parachute release systems must be checked as accessible and shrouds should
be assessed for catching camera helmets/fittings when deployed.
With all aircraft fits you should consider that a prior recce and
discussion with pilots/engineers will save you time and heartache. In the
UK the Civil Aviation Authority, CAA, have strict rules on retro-fits of
anything to aircraft. With any military aircraft the rules are even
stricter.
BE VERY WARY OF OVER ENTHUSIASM BY PARTICIPANTS! You will be amazed how
many people will "overcook" a stunt they do safely every day of
the week, because they are having their moment of fame on camera.
Safety Checklist
Do you
have company Health & Safety regulations covering a particular
activity?
Is the
person responsible for Risk Assessment competent to undertake the assessment?
Does
your insurance fully cover the activity, and does your broker know? (Read
the small print)
Have
you read and fully understood "Eyewitness Ltd. Company Terms &
Conditions of Business"? Here
Have
you made contingencies for Accident, Paramedics, Fire & Rescue, nearest
hospital?
Silly
life & death situations can be avoided by prior planning for the
worst. For instance do not rely on your mobile phone having a signal when
you need to summon the emergency services. Carry a First Aid Kit and have
someone who knows how to use it.
Are you
and your crew fully briefed, capably and properly equipped with safety
gear? Harnesses? Helmets? etc.
USE COMMON SENSE - TAKE ADVICE - TAKE CARE - TAKE
TIME.
You have been warned, the advice above is only minimal. Consult experts
and governing organisations concerned with the particular extreme
sport.
